THE KITCHEN HABIT MANY PEOPLE OVERLOOK: WHY YOU SHOULDN’T HANG A TOWEL ON THE OVEN DOOR

It looks completely harmless.

You finish cooking, grab a tea towel, and drape it over the oven handle because it’s convenient and always within reach.

But there are actually several good reasons to stop doing it.

🔥 1. A TOWEL IS A COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL

Kitchen towels are usually made from cotton or other fabrics that can burn.

Fire-safety guidance recommends keeping towels, oven mitts and other materials that can catch fire away from heat sources. NFPA

Depending on the design of your oven and stove, the towel can be exposed to heat from the oven, nearby burners, hot cookware or escaping heat.

It doesn’t mean every towel will catch fire—but there is no good reason to keep combustible fabric in a heat zone.

🦠 2. YOUR OVEN HANDLE MAY NOT BE AS CLEAN AS YOU THINK

There’s another problem that has nothing to do with fire.

During cooking, you may touch the oven handle with hands that have handled:

🥩 Raw meat
🥚 Eggs
🥣 Dough
🧈 Butter
🍅 Food and sauces

If the same towel hangs on that handle and you later use it to dry your hands or clean dishes, you can transfer contamination back onto your hands or clean items.

That’s why keeping food-contact and hand-drying towels away from frequently touched appliance handles is a better hygiene habit.

🚪 3. THE TOWEL CAN GET IN THE WAY

Every time you open the oven, the towel moves with the door.

It can:

  • Fall onto the floor
  • Touch dirty surfaces
  • Become caught in the door
  • Get splashed with grease
  • Come close to hot cookware

And if you’re carrying a hot baking tray, the last thing you need is a loose towel getting in the way.

⚠️ EVEN OVEN MANUFACTURERS WARN ABOUT THIS

This isn’t simply an internet myth.

Some oven manufacturers explicitly instruct users not to hang towels, gloves or similar textiles from the oven handle because of heat and safety concerns. ManualsLib

So the safest approach is simple:

❌ Don’t use the oven handle as a permanent towel rack.

✅ WHERE SHOULD YOU KEEP YOUR TEA TOWEL?

A better option is a:

✔️ Wall hook
✔️ Towel rail away from the cooking zone
✔️ Kitchen drawer
✔️ Dedicated holder near the sink

And when handling hot dishes, use a dry, heat-resistant oven mitt or potholder, rather than a regular tea towel. Whirlpool

🧠 THE BOTTOM LINE

That towel hanging from the oven handle may seem like one of the most normal things in a kitchen.

But between heat, fire risk, contamination and general kitchen safety, there’s a good reason to give it a different home.

Sometimes the smallest habits are the ones we never think twice about. 👀🔥

Do you keep your kitchen towel on the oven handle? Be honest! 😂👇
