Have you ever gone to a restaurant when you weren’t very hungry, looked at the kids’ menu, and thought:
“Honestly, that’s exactly the amount of food I want.” 😅
Maybe you only want a small burger and fries, a few chicken tenders, grilled cheese, pasta, or a smaller portion of something you already enjoy.
But then the server tells you:
“Sorry, the kids’ menu is only for children.”
And suddenly you realize that some restaurants actually put age restrictions on their kids’ meals.
So… should adults be allowed to order them? 🤔
🧒 Why Do Restaurants Have Kids’ Menus?
Kids’ menus are usually designed around smaller portions, simpler foods and family-oriented pricing.
In a UK Food Standards Agency survey, 83% of restaurants with children’s menus reported having an age limit, with most of those limits applying to children under 12. The survey also found that some restaurants offered smaller portions from their regular menu. GOV.UK
And kids’ meals aren’t always simply smaller versions of adult meals.
They may include:
🍔 A small burger
🍗 Chicken nuggets
🍟 A small serving of fries
🍝 Macaroni or pasta
🥤 A drink
🍦 A dessert
🎁 Sometimes even a toy or activity
For example, some restaurants in Morocco currently advertise children’s meals that combine a small main dish with fries, a drink and sometimes a toy. Yassir Food
💰 Why Would a Restaurant Say No to Adults?
There can be a business reason.
A children’s meal may have a deliberately lower price because it’s part of a restaurant’s family-oriented pricing strategy.
An adult ordering the cheapest meal on the menu could change that pricing model.
Restaurants still have to pay for:
- 👨🍳 Staff
- 🏠 Rent
- ⚡ Utilities
- 🧼 Cleaning
- 🍽️ Table service
- 🥩 Ingredients
- 💳 Payment processing
- 📦 Packaging and other operating costs
So a restaurant may decide that its discounted children’s meals are only available to customers below a certain age.
🤔 But What If an Adult Isn’t Very Hungry?
That’s where the debate gets interesting.
Imagine an adult who simply wants a smaller portion.
Why should someone have to order a large entrée and leave half of it untouched just because they’re over a certain age?
A smaller meal can make sense for many perfectly ordinary reasons:
✔️ You’re not very hungry
✔️ You already ate earlier
✔️ You want a lighter meal
✔️ You don’t want leftovers
✔️ You’re trying to control portion size
✔️ You simply prefer the food on the kids’ menu
In those situations, ordering a smaller portion isn’t necessarily about getting a discount—it can simply be about not wasting food.
🍽️ Not Every Restaurant Has the Same Rule
This is the important part:
There is no universal rule that all restaurants must follow.
Some restaurants restrict children’s meals by age, while others allow adults to order them.
For example, some dining establishments explicitly specify an age limit on their kids’ menus, while others simply describe the dishes without stating that adults are prohibited. Aurocher Oukaïmeden
So it’s always worth checking the menu or asking the server.
🗣️ The Easiest Solution? Just Ask
Instead of assuming, simply say:
“Do you allow adults to order from the kids’ menu?”
If the answer is yes—great! 😊
If the answer is no, you can ask:
“Do you have a smaller portion or a half-size option?”
Some restaurants offer smaller portions from the main menu specifically for customers who don’t want a full-sized meal. GOV.UK
👨👩👧 What Do You Think?
A kids’ meal is still food.
A grilled cheese sandwich doesn’t suddenly become different because the person ordering it is 18 instead of 12. 😂
At the same time, restaurants have the right to establish their own menu conditions and pricing.
So perhaps the real question isn’t:
“Should adults be allowed to order kids’ meals?”
Maybe it’s:
“Should restaurants offer smaller portions for anyone who wants them?” 🤔
That could give customers more choice while allowing restaurants to maintain their pricing structure.
