At first glance, this strange leather piece can be difficult to identify. But the shape, straps, buckles and padded central section give us a pretty good clue.
It appears to be a vintage horse breast collar/breastplate, a piece of equestrian tack used with a saddle or harness.
🐎 What Was It Used For?
A breast collar sits across a horse’s chest and helps keep the saddle from sliding backward, particularly when riding on uneven terrain or during activities where the horse is moving quickly.
The straps are designed to connect the breast collar to the saddle, while the lower strap helps keep everything positioned correctly.
The padded or quilted section visible in the photo would have helped provide protection and comfort where the leather contacted the horse.
🔍 Why Does It Look So Unusual?
Older horse tack was often made from thick leather with multiple adjustment straps and metal buckles.
Over time, pieces can become separated from the rest of the equipment, which can make them look like some completely mysterious object when found by themselves.
The diamond-patterned leather also suggests that this wasn’t simply a basic strap—it was likely a decorative or padded piece of equestrian equipment.
⚠️ One Important Detail
I wouldn’t claim the exact model or age from this photograph alone. There are several types of horse tack with very similar arrangements of straps and buckles.
But horse tack is a much more likely explanation than a mysterious household or medical device.
🐴 If you found this on an old farm, trail, or near a stable, that would make the horse-tack explanation even more likely.
