A dramatic satellite image showing a huge, perfectly defined hurricane eye is circulating online with the caption:
“BREAKING NEWS: Massive Hurricane MELISSA CATEGORY 5 forming…”
But there’s an important problem with that claim. 👀
🌀 The Image Is Real — But the Caption Is Misleading
The image is associated with Hurricane Melissa, but Melissa was not a new hurricane forming in 2026.
Hurricane Melissa was a devastating Category 5 Atlantic hurricane in October 2025. It intensified rapidly near Jamaica and made landfall there on October 28, 2025. The United Nations in Jamaica
The spectacular satellite view of Melissa’s eye was genuine. The World Meteorological Organization specifically published a NOAA satellite image showing Melissa’s symmetrical eye south of Jamaica during its explosive intensification. World Meteorological Organization
🌪️ How Powerful Was Melissa?
Melissa became one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic.
Post-storm analysis found peak sustained winds of approximately 190 mph (306 km/h), with a central pressure of 892 mb. https://www.fox8live.com
At landfall in Jamaica, it was still a Category 5 hurricane, producing catastrophic damage.
The storm affected Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba and The Bahamas, causing more than 90 deaths across the region and enormous economic losses. The United Nations in Jamaica
⚠️ Is Hurricane Melissa Forming Again Right Now?
No.
As of October 4, 2026, the U.S. National Hurricane Center reports no tropical cyclones currently active in the Atlantic. NOAA NHC
And there’s another important detail:
The name “Melissa” has been retired.
Because of the storm’s catastrophic impact, the World Meteorological Organization permanently removed Melissa from the Atlantic hurricane naming list and selected Molly as its replacement. World Meteorological Organization
So a post claiming that a new “Hurricane Melissa” is forming in 2026 is not accurate.
📸 Why Are People Seeing This Image Again?
Extreme-weather images often get recycled on social media, especially when hurricane season is underway.
A spectacular satellite photograph can be completely authentic while the date and caption attached to it are wrong.
That’s exactly why it’s important to check the storm’s date and official hurricane advisories before sharing a “BREAKING NEWS” post.
🌊 The Real Story Is Still Incredible
Melissa wasn’t fake.
It really was an extraordinary Category 5 hurricane, and its impact on Jamaica and other Caribbean countries was devastating.
But this particular viral post is presenting an old storm as a new 2026 event.
So before you share it: check the date. 🌀
