At first glance, the object in the photo looks like something out of a horror movie. But the image appears to show an insect undergoing or having recently completed a molt, rather than an unusual “egg monster.”
The exact species cannot be confirmed from this photo alone, but the body shape and visible appendages are consistent with a cockroach or cockroach relative. Cockroaches shed their outer exoskeleton several times as they grow.
🪳 Why does it look so strange?
When an insect molts, it emerges from its old outer shell with a soft, flexible body. The new exoskeleton then gradually hardens.
That’s why freshly molted insects can look dramatically different from their normal appearance. The color can also appear unusually pale, translucent, or greenish depending on the species and stage.
The material beside the insect may be part of the shed exoskeleton, although the photo isn’t clear enough to confirm every structure.
🚿 Why was it in the bathroom?
Bathrooms provide exactly the sort of conditions many insects use: moisture, water, warmth and protected cracks or spaces.
Cockroaches in particular can hide around plumbing, beneath bathroom cabinets, around toilets and in other sheltered areas with access to moisture.
⚠️ Does finding one mean there are more?
Not necessarily.
One insect can enter from outside or through a small opening. However, if you repeatedly see cockroaches, shed skins, droppings or egg cases, that is stronger evidence that insects may be reproducing nearby. Cockroach egg cases, called oothecae, are usually small, hardened capsules whose appearance varies by species.
🧼 What should you do?
If you find something similar:
- Don’t handle it with bare hands.
- Remove it with a tissue or gloves and dispose of it.
- Clean the area thoroughly.
- Check around pipes, drains and cracks.
- Reduce standing moisture.
- If you repeatedly see cockroaches or egg cases, consider professional pest control.
The important part: the photo doesn’t provide enough evidence to identify the exact species, so claims that this is a particular rare insect should be treated cautiously.
