A viral beauty post claims that applying a homemade mixture containing oil, lemon and a white powder every night for 10 days can produce ātight skin,ā eliminate wrinkles and make you look 10 years younger.
It sounds impressiveābut the claim goes far beyond what the evidence supports.
There is no reliable evidence that this homemade mixture can create collagen in the skin or erase wrinkles in 10 days. The American Academy of Dermatology specifically warns that exaggerated anti-aging promises such as quickly making someone look dramatically younger are unrealistic.
𧬠What is collagen?
Collagen is a structural protein that helps give skin its strength, firmness and support. As we age, the amount and quality of collagen in the skin decline, contributing to wrinkles and loss of firmness.
But simply putting a food ingredient or oil containingāor supposedly āstimulatingāācollagen on the surface of your skin does not mean your skin will suddenly produce large amounts of new collagen.
Some specially formulated cosmetic ingredients, such as certain retinoids and peptides, have evidence for improving signs of skin aging.
š What about lemon?
Lemon is sometimes included in DIY skincare recipes because it contains vitamin C.
However, putting lemon juice directly on your face isn’t the same as using a properly formulated vitamin-C skincare product.
DIY acidic mixtures can irritate the skin, particularly when used repeatedly. Irritation itself can make redness and other signs of aging more noticeable. Dermatologists recommend stopping products that sting or burn and introducing new skincare products carefully.
š„ And the white powder?
The image appears to show a powder being added to the mixture, but the exact ingredient and proportions cannot be reliably determined from the photograph alone.
If it is baking soda, for example, that doesn’t make it a collagen treatment. Using household ingredients on the face without knowing their concentration, pH and compatibility with your skin can cause irritation.
That’s why it’s better not to reproduce an unidentified DIY recipe simply because it appears in a viral image.
⨠What actually helps with wrinkles?
According to dermatologists, the foundation of an anti-aging skincare routine is much less complicated:
āļø 1. Sunscreen
Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher helps protect against UV damage, one of the major contributors to premature skin aging.
š§ 2. Moisturizer
Moisturizer traps water in the skin and can temporarily make fine lines appear less noticeable by plumping the skin.
š§“ 3. Retinoids/retinol
Retinoids are among the better-studied topical ingredients for improving fine lines, skin texture and pigmentation. Some retinoids can also stimulate collagen production.
š§Ŗ 4. Properly formulated products
A commercial skincare product isn’t automatically better because it’s expensive, but formulations have the advantage of controlled concentrations, stability and testing that a kitchen mixture doesn’t necessarily have.
ā³ Can any cream make you look 10 years younger in 10 days?
No credible evidence supports that claim.
Even legitimate anti-aging products generally require weeks to months to show noticeable results. The AAD notes that moisturizers may produce a quick temporary improvement, while many other products take at least six weeks and sometimes up to three months to show results.
šØ Bottom line
The viral recipe may make skin feel temporarily softer or more moisturized depending on its ingredients, but calling it āhomemade collagenā and promising wrinkle-free, tighter skin in 10 days is misleading.
Don’t confuse a moisturizing effect with new collagen production.
For a simple evidence-based routine:
Morning: Gentle cleanser ā moisturizer ā SPF 30+
Night: Gentle cleanser ā moisturizer ā appropriate retinol/retinoid if suitable for your skin
And if you have sensitive skin, test new products on a small area first.
